Website Flopping
No its not a spelling mistake – Website Flopping is the term long time website flipper Trevor Somerville came up with to describe his own particular system of building and selling websites for a living.
Trevor’s spin on website flipping is to keep any sites that do better than expected and to sell his flops.
The idea is that you build your chosen type of sites – Adsense, memberships, ecommerce etc – with the full intention of flipping them but every now and then you find you have created a real winner and so you hang on to it.
As your flipping business grows hopefully so does your winners so that given enough time you end up with a portfolio of high earning sites to back up your flipping business.
Here’s Trevor’s own explanation:
“Flopping basically means to flip a site that has not made money yet or is not making as much as you wanted and you decide to flip it for cash on demand to invest in those that have more potential. Sometimes you may just want an injection of money, so flopping is the perfect business model.”
For those just starting out and building a portfolio of sites, understanding website flopping will help keep the number of sites manageable.
For those that have been at it a while, website flopping is a great way to clear out the dead wood. It should also inspire you into freshening up some of those older sites you haven’t looked at for 18 months.
Trevor’s website flopping course is a 30 day membership site. Week 1 covers the type of sites to build and how to build them. By week 2 you have your first site ready to sell and you are walked through the process. You also start building your second and third sites.
Week 3 covers building profitable content sites, monetizing them and preparing to sell them while week 4 covers advanced website selling techniques including how to step it up into a full time 6 figure a year business.
I took the course early in the year and highly recommend it. More details here.
